New Media Artist: Scott Snibbe

“One of the biggest challenges for the presentation of new media art is to engage the audience for a period of time that is long enough to allow a piece to reveal its content.”

One New Media artist that is able to elude this challenge is Scott Snibbe from New York.  The 47 year old is a graduate from both Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design.  Specifically related to this style of art presentation, Scott Snibbe’s piece Boundary Functions (1998) requires the audience (at least two people) to be engaged so that the piece can actually reveal its content.  Boundary Functions is a four-by-four meter floor that uses a camera, computer, and projector to draw lines between the people highlighting their personal space.  In a demonstration video it states that the piece, “shows that personal space, though we call it our own, is only defined by others and changes without our control.”  Boundary Functions has received multiple honors and has been featured in art museums across the U.S. and the world.  You can read more about Scott Snibbe and Boundary Functions on his website.
